Main Story: There lived an old farmer in a village. He had four sons. They always used to fight each other. The farmer advised them to live in peace. But they did not listen to him. The farmer was very sad at heart. He thought that their future was dark. The farmer became very old and weak. He lost all hopes of living any longer. He thought he might die at any moment. He would not live long. What would his sons do after his death? If they quarreled with one another, they would spoil his property and be poor. He also thought of their future and at last hit upon a plan. He found out a plan to give them a proper lesson. So, one day he called his four sons and ordered them to bring a bundle of sticks. The sons did so. He then ordered his eldest son to break the bundle. He tried again and again but failed. He then ordered his second son to break the bundle. But he also failed to break it. Thus he ordered his third and fourth sons to break the bundle. But they all failed to break the bundle. The old man then ordered them to untie the bundle. They disunited the sticks. The old man told them to break the sticks one by one. This time they could break the sticks easily. Now, the old man said to his sons, “My dear sons, you see that you could not break the bundle when they were united in a bundle. But when the bundle is disunited, you could easily break them. Do not quarrel anymore and remain united so that nothing can harm you.” So the sons understood their faults and promised to remain united even after their father’s death.
MORAL: UNITY IS STRENGTH.
